UK National Lottery history

UK National Lottery

The National Lottery is a state-franchised national lottery in the UK. It is one of the most popular lottery brands in the country and globally in equal measure.

Currently, the National Lottery is operated by Camelot Group and regulated by the Gambling Commission. The lottery brand enjoys a rich history that defines its growth to become one of the largest lottery brands in the world.

History

Did you know that a 1698 statute illegalized England lotteries unless authorized by the same statute? That marks the genesis of the lottery in England where lotteries were established for charity. It was also a source of money for the British to go to war.

In 1994, the Camelot Group, a private operator, was awarded the franchise of the National Lottery to run the nationwide lottery.

The first draw of the national lottery took place on 19th November 1994. Unlike today, the draw was run only on a television program. Now, it is possible to play UK lotto online and check results online. The first-ever numbers to be drawn were 30, 3, 5, 44, 14, and 22 with the bonus number as 10.

In this first draw, there were seven jackpot winners who shared a prize o £5,874,778. It is interesting that the first draw attracted multiple winners. This was a clear indication that the UK National Lottery was not a scam but an avenue for people to make money and become rich.

Camelot introduced Thunderball in 1999.

Rebranding program

Early in the 21st century, the National Lottery started a major rebranding program that was designed to combat declining sales.

Lotto introduced

The main game was renamed Lotto. The extra Lottery game was renamed Lotto Extra. Later in 2006, Lotto Extra was retired because of low sales. There were modifications made to the stylized crossed-fingers logo. Lotto is still available up to today and you can check UK Lotto results online if you are a regular player.

All the games as a collection were known as The National Lottery. It still remains a popular form of gambling in the UK. Some of the lottery games that operate under this brand include Thunderball, Set for Life, and UK Lotto and EuroMillions.

Ways of playing

Before the emergence of the internet, players had to purchase tickets in shops. However, there is an evolution and it is now possible to purchase tickets online. Players simply need to register an account and play Set For Life online or any other of the lottery games available on this brand.

The online platform has been an opening that has increased engagement over the years, making the National Lottery popular across the country and the entire continent.
