El Gordo de Navidad vs El Gordo de la Primitiva: Spain's Two Gordos Compared
Spain has two lotteries called El Gordo: the once-a-year Christmas Lottery on 22 December and El Gordo de la Primitiva, drawn every Sunday. Here is how they differ in price, prizes and odds, and which one you can play online.
When people in Spain say El Gordo – “the fat one” – they can mean two different games. One is the top prize of the Christmas Lottery (Lotería de Navidad), drawn once a year on 22 December. The other is El Gordo de la Primitiva, a weekly lotto drawn every Sunday. Both are run by the Spanish state operator Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, but they work very differently.

The Christmas Gordo: Many Winners, Fixed Prizes
The Christmas Lottery pays fixed amounts. With 100,000 numbers in the draw and each number sold in many décimos, the top prize is split across thousands of tickets, often bought together by families, colleagues and whole villages. That is what makes 22 December a national event. In 2026 the draw pays €2,870 million in prizes in total. You will find the full prize list in our guide to El Gordo de Navidad 2026.
El Gordo de la Primitiva: One Big Jackpot Every Week
El Gordo de la Primitiva works like a classic lotto. If nobody matches all five numbers and the key number, the jackpot rolls over to the next Sunday, which is how it has grown to an estimated €19.8 million. The key number also works as the refund (reintegro), and about one line in six wins a prize. The game was launched in 1993.
