French Lotto – how to play?

The traditional version of French Lotto is available in France. It means that a player can go to a local lottery office and purchase a paper lottery ticket for the next or several national lottery draws.

To play French Lotto, you must choose five basic numbers from 1 to 49 and one additional number from 1 to 10. A “Quick Pick” tool can be used to choose lucky numbers either manually or completely at random.

French Lotto prizes & jackpot

The prizes and jackpots in the French Lotto are not the largest in Europe, but this lottery is always worth playing. The basic jackpot begins at € 2,000,000 and can increase if no players win the French Lotto jackpot. The rollovers are limited – the jackpot can only be rolled over 34 times, so the largest French Lotto jackpot can reach € 36,000,000.

If no one wins the top prize in French Lotto after 34 rollovers, the jackpot is split among all lucky winners of the second tier of French Lotto prizes.

Aside from the jackpot, French Lotto has eight different prize tiers. Only one matching – an additional number – is required to win the smallest prize. The odds of winning the 9th tier of prizes are 1 in 18.

If you play French Lotto offline, you will have 60 days to claim your prizes.

French Lotto prizes are tax-free, but if a winner lives outside of France, he should check the tax laws of the country in which he resides.

The table below contains all of the information about French Lotto prizes, tiers, and chances of winning. As you can see, the chances of winning in French Lotto are much higher than in EuroMillions or other lotteries with large jackpots. So, if you want a better chance of winning, French Lotto is a great option.

France Lotto – the highest prizes in history

As previously stated, the largest jackpot can reach € 36,000,000, but the French Lotto jackpot has never reached this level.

After 13 rollovers, the biggest jackpot of € 26,000,000 was won in September 2021. One lucky player matched all of the basic numbers, including 3, 5, 15, 33, 49, and the bonus number 8.

In June 2011, the second-largest French Lotto jackpot of € 24,000,000 was won. All of the basic numbers: 10, 13, 22, 30, 45, plus the bonus number 1 were matched by a single player.

In May 2014, the third-largest French Lotto jackpot of € 23,000,000 was won. A single player also won this prize after matching all of the basic numbers: 8, 9, 40, 41, 49, and the bonus number 3.

French Lotto fun facts

The French Lotto jackpot was won twice by one lucky player. This player resides in Montpellier and plays French Lotto with the same set of lucky numbers that he has used since 1976! His first major win came in 1996, when he received € 2,800,000. He won again in 2011 thanks to his luck and a fixed set of numbers. The jackpot for the French Lotto this week was € 3,000,000.

Sports and sports-related charities are supported by the French Lotto. The ticket price includes a portion that goes to charity and social programmes.

Aside from a daily draw and normal prizes, French Lotto also offers a raffle game with ten prizes at € 20,000 each. Every French Lotto participant is immediately entered into the raffle’s additional draw.
